A Song of Praise, Defiance and Determination.” First appeared in Akwesasne Note, 1973. New material by Kenny in this edition. Stapled pamphlet. Pinecone logo, inside rear cover, by Helen Rundell. The poem quotes the chant, based on a Lakota Sioux Ghost Dance Song: “Chankpe Opi Wakpala,” Lakota Sioux meaning Wounded Knee. Penelope Myrtle Kelsey writes that Kenny composed the poem while “immobilized on bedrest as a result of a heart condition,” frustrated that he could not join the Wounded Knee Occupation of 1973.
